What is Balloon Sinuplasty?
Balloon Sinuplasty is a safe and effective procedure that relieves the pain and pressure associated with chronic sinus infection.
How does it work?
Balloon Sinuplasty opens blocked sinus cavities by guiding a wire and balloon catheter into the inflamed sinus. The balloon is then slowly inflated to expand the sinus opening without any cutting. Next.
saline is sprayed into the effected area to flush out trapped mucus and pus. The system is then removed leaving the sinuses open, restoring normal sinus drainage and function while preserving normal anatomy and mucosal tissue.
What are the benefits?
- Non-invasive compared to traditional sinus surgery
- Gentle and efficient
- May be performed in the office under local anesthetic
- Minimal pain and discomfort during and after the procedure
- Most patients can resume normal diet and activity same day
What kind of results can I expect?
Clinical studies show most patients report meaningful improvement in sinus symptoms and quality of life for more than 2 years after surgery based on follow up.
How does Balloon Sinus Surgery Compare to Traditional Sinus Surgery?
Balloon sinuplasty makes minor, yet impressive changes to the drainage pathways of the sinus cavities. Balloon sinuplasty has a goal of restoring your anatomy to physiologic normal.
The drainage pathways are only a few millimeters in diameter in a person without sinus disease. People with diseased sinus cavities have a abnormally smaller drainage pathway, or that pathway is blocked with diseased tissue. By inflating the balloon in that drainage pathway we open it to a normal size. Bone remodeling happens over time, and the sinuses heal permanently with a larger opening for drainage. This is done without cutting and has a very fast recovery time.
When compared to traditional sinus surgery or FESS, functional endoscopic sinus surgery; traditional surgery has a longer recovery, removes an unnecessary amount of structure, and causes an imbalance to the chemical composure of your sinuses, which makes the cilia in your sinuses stop beating built up mucous out of the sinus cavities.
