Understanding Sinus Disease

Your sinuses are the hollowed out portions of the skull located just to the side of the nose, and extending down. Lined with mucus and containing tiny hairs (cilia), your sinuses serve to make the air you breath easier on the body by warming, filtering, and humidifying it.

Sinus disease may come on suddenly (acute), or occur slowly over a period of time (chronic).

The cilia filter out fluid and foreign material by pushing them toward fixed openings (ostia), where they are purged. When the mucosa swells, the cilia may not work as intended. This can cause fluid to accumulate and allows for the colonization of bacteria, viruses, or fungi. This irritation can lead to chronic sinus inflammation, also called sinus disease.

Sinus disease may come on suddenly (acute), or occur slowly over an extended period of time (chronic). Acute sinusitis is more common and can be treated with antibiotics and other noninvasive therapies. Chronic sinusitis, on the other hand, typically plagues sufferers in various ways for years. It is usually first treated with a long-term course of antibiotics and nasal or oral steroids.

Signs of Sinus Disease

You may have sinus disease if you have at least two of the following symptoms with mild to severe manifestations:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Desire to blow your nose
  • Cough
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Reduced sense of smell or taste
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Thick nasal discharge
  • Dizziness
  • Ear pain
  • Ear fullness
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Waking up at night
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Reduced productivity or concentration

Sinus Disease Treatments

Your sinus treatment will begin with a diagnosis of sinusitis using an endoscopic nasal examination or a sinus CT scan. These tools allow us to detect swelling and infection that is characteristic of sinus disease. As a convenience to our patients, we have an onsite CT scanner that takes detailed images of the sinuses. This allows patients to remain in one location for their diagnostics.

Your minimally invasive sinus treatment may involve the following:

Minimally Invasive Balloon Sinuplasty: Sometimes referred to as BSP, this procedure relies on a small, flexible balloon catheter to open blocked sinus passageways. Drainage of mucus buildup then ensues, to ease and reduce sinus inflammation.

PROPEL® Sinus Implant: This implant is placed in the drainage pathway to deliver a localized, controlled drug directly into the sinus tissue. The drug’s anti-inflammatory properties dissolve into the sinus lining, allowing for healing and a reduced recurrence of sinus disease.
